MSN Video Download

MSN Video Download  apparently went live today with a choice of two membership types  Premium and Basic.  Premium is $19.95 a year and has more content than the free Basic membership.  Not wanting to commit myself to a membership yet I signed up for the Basic membership, thinking I could load some videos on to the miniSD card in my smartphone....

Sign up was easy, I used my passport account, agreed to the terms and installed the download software.  The download status page showed content was downloading from Fox Sports.  In order to sync content to my phone I needed a smart playlist so I followed the instructions to download one.  This was the first problem, the instructions used Windows Media Player 9 and I'm using Windows Media Player 10, a little strange, but not a huge problem.  With the smart playlist in place I thought I'd be good to go...

That wasn't going to be the case though.  I started by trying to play a video in Media Player directly and got prompted for a username and password which was being requested by 'admin.theplatform.com' not 'msnvideodownloads.com'.  I tried my Passport email address and password which might not have been a great idea, but it didn't work anyway.  Meanwhile I could see that Activesync had been trying to sync the content to my phone so I checked the Sync page in WMP.  Nothing had been synced, instead  there was an error message 'Windows Media Player can not synchronize the protected file.  Protected files can not be converted to the required quality level or format'.

Now I have almost half a gigabyte of content (and it's still getting downloaded) and I can't watch any of it.  If anyone gets this working I'd love to know how.

3 tips: free Bobby, free Waizilla, and use Acrobot
I am sorry that I was unable to provide my usual accessible web design tips over the last couple of weeks; I got caught up in a number of projects that kept me very busy. To try to make up for my tardiness, this week I am offering 'three tips for the price of one'.Tip 1.Although Bobby, the web accessibility evaluator, is now a commercial product (and the website version only lets you evaluate a page once a minute), did you know that you can still download a free version of the Bobby evaluator? I recently found a link to the original download on the WATS.ca website, along with a host of other useful accessibility testing tools. Download the free Bobby accessibility tester (requires the Java Runtime Engine which is included in the download).Tip 2.While I am on the subject of web accessibility checkers, you may, or may not, be aware that a free cross-platform website accessibility testing tool called WaiZilla, is currently being developed by Tim Roberts, and a group of other programmers . This is an Open Source project, so not only can you can keep up with developments by regularly visiting the website, if you are interested and have the appropriate talents, you can also contribute to the development process.Tip 3.If you find that marking up all your acronyms has become a bit of a chore, you may be interested in a tool developed by Ian Lloyd on the Accessify website; the Acrobot - Abbreviation and Acronym Generator. This useful tool will find acronyms in your HTML, add the tag, and the appropriate title attribute. There is also a 'favelet' provided on the site to make it even easier to pass text through to Acrobot. The tips archive is at: http://www.mcu.org.uk/weeklytips/

Print a free book from Google
Google adds to free book downloads: 'Google Inc. today plans to begin letting consumers download and print free of charge classic novels and many other, more obscure books that are in the public domain. Using Google's Book Search service, Web surfers hunting titles like Dante's 'Inferno' and Aesop's Fables will be able to download PDF files of the books for later reading, to run keyword searches or to print them on paper. Until now, the service only allowed people to read the out-of-copyright books online.'

Upgrading to Mandrake 10

Upgrading to Mandrake 10

Last night I decided to upgrade my home Linux box, which was running Mandrake 9.2, to the newly-released Mandrake 10.

I run Mandrake at home, and until recently, on my work machine, too.  Now at work I run Red Hat 9, but only because we use ClearCase (don't get me started) as our version control software, and it patches into the kernel, and only supports Red Hat.  So I was forced (kicking and screaming) to switch to Red Hat at work.

Now, this is just my personal opinion, and I'm sure I'll get flak for it, but Mandrake beats Red Hat for ease-of-installation and use.  Not by a whole lot, but enough that I perfer Mandrake.  My upgrade to Mandrake 10 is a good example of what I'm talking about.

Mandrake has not yet released the ISO files of the 'official' version of Mandrake 10, as they want their preferred (read that, paying) customers to be able to get it first.  But you can get 'official' Mandrake 10 if you are willing to follow a few simple steps.

  • First, find a Mandrake mirror site.  I used raven.cslab.vt.edu.
  • Using any modern browser that lets you access an ftp site, go to the directory containing the official Mandrake 10 release, which on that site was '/pub/linux/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586'.  Then go into the 'images' subdirectory.
  • Download 'boot.iso', and burn it to a CD.
  • Using your existing Mandrake 9.2 installation, write down the following information: system name, system domain, system IP address, DNS IP address, gateway IP address (if you use a gateway to access the internet)
  • Insert the CD you just burned, and reboot your system so that it boots from the CD
  • A Mandrake 10 special boot loader will come up.  It will ask you for the info I had you write down, including the location of the ftp site and the directory for the Mandrake 10 source.  Use the raven site from above.
  • If you have broadband, it will spend almost 3 hours downloading Mandrake 10.  If you are on a dial-up, this may take all night.  Fire up your Windoze game machine and play 'Splinter Cell' for a while.
  • Once the download is done, the installer will walk you through the normal installation steps.  Tell it you are upgrading an existing system.  It will recognize all of your current drives, partitions, setting, everything.
  • Done.  You now have a Mandrake 10 system.

Once Mandrake does the wide release of Mandrake 10, installation will be even easier.  Find a site hosting the ISO files, download them using Bittorrent, burn the CDs, reboot from CD1, and off you go.  But the fact that I can do a full upgrade over the Internet using only the steps I gave above, with no problems what so ever... well, bravo to Mandrake.

Oh, and Mandrake 10 comes with Python 2.3.3.

Developer Productivity Study: Comparing Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 to SAP XI for Integrating Heterogeneous Systems (Download)

Today’s business applications not only run on a number of different platforms, they are often implemented in a variety of programming languages, running on multiple operating systems. To meet these demands, enterprise developers are progressively merging systems and infrastructure into comprehensive integration suites by relying on service-oriented architectures (SOA) that make integration possible at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Microsoft engaged Crimson Consulting Company, a leading provider of consulting services to the high technology industry, to conduct a comparative study of developer productivity with integration servers Microsoft® BizTalk® Server 2006 and SAP XI 3.0, using mySAP™ ERP in heterogeneous environments. The study was conducted in collaboration with Intelligroup, one of the leading SAP integrators.

This paper explains Crimson's methodology and results of their study.

User customization using a style sheet switcher and scripts.
Gez at Juicy Studio has created an ASP version of my turbo-charged style sheet switcher. He has also christened it, the 'Byrne/Lemon Technique' - which I like the sound of. :-)Apart from providing and excellent tutorial and the required ASP code (more elegantly coded than my own) - he has also fixed a few problems:Changing the file suffix of the external style sheets to .php meant Gecko based browser were not getting the correct MIME type (i.e. the style sheet was not being recognised as a style sheet). For my own PHP example this is solved adding the following code to the top of each external style sheet:The presentation changes made via the form do not always appear to work in Opera, due to the style sheet being cached. Caching the style sheet is of course a good thing, as it saves on download time - but in this case it creates a problem Gez suggests, 'a gentle reminder to refresh the page having made changes helps the visitor understand what's happened.
