My response to the foolsI was watching a great video of a machine gun shoot here http://www.bestofgooglevideo.com/video.php?video=376 and noticed the rating votes leaned heavy towards the unfavorable. I then began to read the blog replies and found that there were a bunch of non-US citizens who loathe the fact that we have gun rights, and excercise defense. They further commence to bash our actions in Iraq, our foreign policy, and directly blamed us for the existence of terrorism stating that we provoke it. What is the object element for? And what's it got to do with accessibility?Currently we add images to our pages using the img element, we tend to add fancy bits of video or wizzy and exciting flash using the applet element. So why do we need the object element? The object element introduced as part of HTML 4, and is designed to be used for all instances when we want to embed a generic object - such as a flash movie, or a video or an image - into a web page.That's all very well but what's it got to do with accessibility? Well the fantastic thing about the Object elements is that you can use it to provide lots of alternative presentations of your content - you are not confined to providing a simple text equivalent - as you are for when using the img tag.For example, you want to provide a Quicktime video on a web page - but it turns out that some browsers don't have the support for Quicktime - so you can specify that a mpeg movie be played instead, or some other alternative format. CSS and Web development search enginesIn October 2006 Google extended their Co-op platform with Custom Search Engine, which lets anybody create a specialised search engine (and earn money from it if they want to). I'm aware of three custom search engines of interest for Web professionals: While custom search engines are an interesting concept I find myself somewhat wary of using them. Not because there's anything wrong with them, but because I can't help wondering if what I'm looking for is on a site that the custom search engine has not added to its index. Only Ergonosearch has a list of indexed sites. You can see which sites are indexed by CSS Search, but only by creating a Google account and logging in. I can't find any way of finding out which sites Sparkl indexes. I think giving visitors easy access to a list of indexed sites would remove most of that feeling of uncertainty and make me trust specialised search engines more. I first encountered DDR at the Sony Metronome in San Francisco around '99 or so; a local news station was doing a piece on a kid in his early 20s who had danced away 60lbs. So, why buy a typicaly video game that makes them even more sedentary? DDR gets them moving. Premium is $19.95 a year and has more content than the free Basic membership. Not wanting to commit myself to a membership yet I signed up for the Basic membership, thinking I could load some videos on to the miniSD card in my smartphone.... Sign up was easy, I used my passport account, agreed to the terms and installed the download software. The download status page showed content was downloading from Fox Sports. In order to sync content to my phone I needed a smart playlist so I followed the instructions to download one. This was the first problem, the instructions used Windows Media Player 9 and I'm using Windows Media Player 10, a little strange, but not a huge problem. With the smart playlist in place I thought I'd be good to go... That wasn't going to be the case though. I started by trying to play a video in Media Player directly and got prompted for a username and password which was being requested by 'admin.theplatform.com' not 'msnvideodownloads.com'. I tried my Passport email address and password which might not have been a great idea, but it didn't work anyway. Meanwhile I could see that Activesync had been trying to sync the content to my phone so I checked the Sync page in WMP. Nothing had been synced, instead there was an error message 'Windows Media Player can not synchronize the protected file. Protected files can not be converted to the required quality level or format'. Now I have almost half a gigabyte of content (and it's still getting downloaded) and I can't watch any of it. Well... it does do 640x480 at 30fps it does 800x600 at up to 15, and 1280x1024 at 15. So this is not the cheap build it my slef HD Cam I was hoping for.
