Can web service adoption usher-in a collaborative development process?
Service Oriented Mass Customization (SOMC) asks us to stop thinking of an application as an isolated island lacking a semantic bridge to the rest of the user's world. Instead allow users to build bridges by explicitly mapping elements from your application domain to others available in their burgeoning Service oriented architecture (SOA). Once these bridges are built, users can take your application to strange and exotic places.

The Application Web

WebThis week I attended an IBM software technology briefing about SOA. Only brilliant technical people could come up with SOA as a name for something. Let's see, is it safe operating area, School of the Americas, Skies of Arcadia (a Nintendo game), Society of Actuaries, state of the art, or the Sarbanes-Oxley Act? Nope. Maybe it is about an architectural firm that has great customer service? Or maybe it is about the architecture of a building that has a good service entrance? Neither. The SOA of the briefing stands for "service oriented architecture". It is really important. The wikipedia has a comprehensive definition of SOA but basically it is about a new way to get things done with software. Actually it is isn't new -- the idea has been around for decades -- but now it is really happening. It is so much a part of the vernacular at IBM that they just matter of factly call it "so a". After an IBM briefing about "virtualization" a year ago, I tried to explain the word in simple terms (see Virtually Real or Really Virtual). I'll try that approach here with SOA.

In a nutshell, SOA will allow web sites to do much more than “click here to buy”. In fact web sites built with SOA will result in us standing in fewer lines in the physical world and have to endure fewer telephone call centers that want to control us. Fulfillment models at our favorite retailer’s web site will result in the staple goods we need just showing up outside the garage door when we need them. If businesses have the right attitude, SOA will enable them to get closer to the ultimate Internet -- to build a people-oriented and user-friendly integrated experience for all parties involved - employees on the intranet, suppliers, customers, partners, analysts and prospective constituents. There is more to this story. (read more)

Resources from recent talks

I have posted slides and demo code from my talks this month at Code Camp 5, DevTeach, and VSLive! on my site here. I have also posted each of these individually on the respected sites for the conference.

Each of these conferences went well. There were lots of great questions, and as with all speaking opportunities, I learn from those attending as well as become more comfortable with the material. One highlight for me was the great evals for each, and at DevTeach, I actually placed as the #1 speaker in the SQL/Data track based on evaluation results.

One issue I had with getting Service Broker to work at Code Camp 5 was resolved before DevTeach. I found that after I attached the new AdventureWorks database (included in the latest April SQL Server 2005 Samples), the authorization for the database was different than what I was using. This caused messages sent from an Initiator Queue to fail for Service Broker. My friend Rushi (a developer on the Service Broker team at Microsoft -- he has a great blog) mentioned I needed to do this:

ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON DATABASE::AdventureWorks TO sa ;
GO

After this step, things were right again and my demos WORKED!

Juicy CSS Accessibility Analyser
Gez Lemon has come up with yet another useful addition to the accessible web designers toolbox - a CSS accessibility checker. I could take the time to tell you what it does, or be lazy and leave that job to Gez:'I've been working on a CSS accessibility program. It's a very basic serviceat the moment, but I'm hoping over time to make the service highlightpotential accessibility issues. At the moment, it validates the CSS usingthe W3C's validation service, checks for colour contrast between foregroundand background colours, and then checks that relative units have beenspecified for font sizes. It also has an option to check that relative unitshave been used for margin, padding, and width. At this point, I wouldn't sayit's amazingly useful, but it's an extra tool that might be useful fordevelopers wanting to ensure their work is accessible.'More information can be found at Juicy Studio. The serviceis available from http://www.juicystudio.com/services/csstest.asp.Results from a CSS test falls into one of three areas: I tested the MCU stylesheet, and got a few warnings because I had either not specified both foreground and background colours, or used transparent as the background colour.I also got one error, because I made the background and foreground colours for my banner the same - which is exactly as I intended - so it proveds the CSS checker is working as advertised.Well done Gez - looks like you are onto something here!

EMI Deal With Qtrax Shows Long Way To Go
 />I don't imagine that anyone thought EMI's deal with Qtrax would allow non-DRM files of EMI artists to run free on the Internet but, is a completely new and proprietary format the way to win over users?<br /><br />According to the <a href='http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/12/AR2006061200101.html'>Washington Post</a>, when launched, the service will not only be ad-supported but, the free songs will be in a proprietary '.mpq' format that can only be played a limited number of times and only on the computer to which they were downloaded.<br /><br />Add to that the fact that tracks player will force 'click-to-buy' advertising on listeners and you have the makings of a truly subpar offering. This is starting to look less like P2P and more like a listening post in a brick and mortar record store. Actually, with the listening post, you aren't subjected to anywhere near the captive audience style marketing that is promised from Qtrax and EMI.<br /><br />A flat fee monthly service will be offered by Qtrax, and the files provided under that agreement will be in the Windows Media format. No word on bitrate, but if Qtrax's Windows Media based competitors are any clue, the subscription purchased tracks will be of sub-par quality. Tracks <strike>purchased</strike> leased through the service will no longer play if your subscription lapses. <br /><br />Financial terms of the EMI deal were not disclosed, but EMI does get a share of advertising revenue generated by Qtrax.<p>'Advertisers are willing to pay a lot of money to be associated with music, and the music industry is willing to cooperate as long as the value is preserved and the artists get paid,' Parks said.</p>[via <a href='http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/12/AR2006061200101.html'>The Washington Post</a>]<h6 style='clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;'></h6><a href='http://p2p.weblogsinc.com/2006/06/12/emi-deal-with-qtrax-shows-long-way-to-go/' rel='bookmark' title='Permanent link to this entry'>Permalink</a> <BR><a href=read more:
